Increasing EV battery performance while lowering cost? That’s the goal of OneD Battery Sciences. With a breakthrough technology known as SINANODE, the company is successfully adding more energy-dense silicon into the anodes of lithium-ion EV batteries to increase efficiency and affordability.
Why silicon? Because it can store ten times the energy of graphite alone—yet previous attempts to include more in the anode have failed due to expansion and breakage. By eliminating these issues, SINANODE unlocks silicon’s full potential to advance the production of competitive EVs that meet market demand. The company has even partnered with GM for joint R&D of silicon anode technology for more efficient EV batteries.

EV sales are growing at an accelerating pace but still represent a small number of new car sales in most markets. This is not surprising; most people cannot afford them. In the U.S., 80% of new cars are sold at an MSRP below $40,000. In 2022, Porsche Taycan sold less than 6,000 units in the U.S. and Tesla sold 20 times more Models 3 and Y than Models S and X.
NEWS
Vincent Pluvinage, CEO of silicon anode developer OneD Battery Sciences, is on a rant: His fellow next-generation battery makers, he says, are overpromising a future of cheap, faster-charging, long-distance electric vehicles. Pluvinage says automakers will be reluctant to adopt these technologies after sinking billions of dollars into factories devoted to conventional lithium-ion and graphite batteries. As a result, he says, his rivals won’t achieve the high sales they predict this decade, but will be relegated to the niche premium and ultraluxury segments.

Lopez was previously a partner at Nixon Peabody, an international law firm, and served as OneD’s external counsel since 2014.
NEWS
The battery-electric-vehicle race continues to heat up. In 2022, the auto industry saw not only a significant uptick in BEV sales but also an increased focus from OEMs on bringing costs down.
The need to make BEVs more affordable is obvious: The majority of car buyers cannot afford today’s models, which are priced higher than most internal-combustion-engine vehicles. Fortunately, the U.S. has seen recent regulatory changes, although the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) can provide tax credits only if batteries contain enough materials sourced locally.

NEWS
Battery technology plays a vital role in the development and growth of electric vehicles. OneD Battery Sciences, a leader in EV battery technology, introduced SINANODE, a type of technology that shows promise for the future of silicon-based EV batteries. The SINANODE process fuses silicon nanowires onto graphite powders. OneD Battery Sciences claims this technology triples the energy density of the anode and cuts costs per kWh in half. When a battery has a higher energy density, it can increase its range and the nanowires shorten charging time. Optimizing performance and reducing costs can greatly benefit the EV industry and support EV adoption.
NEWS
AZoCleantech speaks to Vincent Pluvinage, CEO and co-founder of OneD Battery Sciences, about SINANODE, an innovative technology set to make electric vehicles more cost-effective and with longer ranges.
NEWS
Charging an EV battery is simply storing electrons and lithium ions in the appropriate electrode of the cells in the battery pack. Today, almost all the anode electrodes store electrical energy in natural or synthetic graphite particles coated onto the current collector in large EV cell factories. A few leading EV models (for example Tesla Y, Tesla 3, and Porsche Taycan) contain a small amount (a few percentage points) of silicon oxide additives mixed with the graphite, to increase the cells energy and power density, hence increasing EV range and charging speed for a better driving experience versus graphite-only EVs.
NEWS
OneD Battery Sciences, leaders in electric vehicle (EV) battery technology, today announced it has begun construction of its first pilot plants in Moses Lake, WA. The plants will enable each EV maker to customize and optimize silicon-graphite anodes for use in their upcoming advanced lithium-ion EV batteries using OneD’s patented SINANODE technology process.

NEWS
The race to develop and sell new electric vehicles (EVs) is driving huge investments in new battery materials; new cell manufacturing process technologies; and new factories in key markets. In fact, The International Energy Agency predicts that by 2040, 55% of all new car sales and 33% of the global fleet will be electric.
